What is Antivirus?

Your Security - Antivirus

Antivirus (anti-virus) software is a "Must Have" software package that everyone, including you, should have installed on your system whether you are online for 10 minutes at night checking emails, or if you are a heavy internet user, antivirus software must be installed, running, and up to date. Anyone reading this article should take a few minutes to check they have antivirus software installed. The next thing to check is that it is in it's subscription period, and then check to make sure that the antivirus "definition" updates are up to date and installed. To find out more about what antivirus software is read here.

Do you have Antivirus installed - and is it up to date?

Many people have antivirus software already installed on their systems but do not realise that the subscription to the updates for the antivirus only last for a certain amount of time, they do not last the lifetime of the computer. If you have antivirus software on your system that is not up to date then you are wide open to attack from new viruses and with hundreds of new viruses reported every month it won't take long for you to get infected. Nearly two-thirds of consumers (63 per cent) have been the victim of a virus infection in the past, this can be avoided if computer users took the time and effort to understand, and purchase good security software. Remember that it is always cheaper to purchase antivirus software than to call out an engineer to sort out an infected computer, or worse still, lose all your valuable date, files or photos.

Are FREE firewall's any good?

One question always asked is "Are FREE firewalls any good"? Free firewalls are fine and will do a fairly good job but that is as far as it goes. Basically free firewalls are "cut down" versions of the full, paid for versions, this means that features are not able to be used unless you have the paid version. We always recommend that you purchase a good solid firewall which means you have full control and support for the software. It is also a good idea to purchase a modem that has a hardware firewall too.

Quick Help...

  • What is a Virus Definition File?
    • Virus Definition files contains the latest free virus databases for your antivirus software. These updates are what help to protect, find or delete viruses, without these definition files, your computer and all the information on it are left open to attack.

  • What is meant by the Antivirus Subscription Period?
    • This is the length of time your antivirus software will run and receive FREE Virus Definition Files. Once your subscription period is over these Definition Files will not be received and your software will not protect you from the latest viruses released.

What is the best antivirus software?

This is a hard one to answer. There are many very good antivirus products out there, some well known, others not so well known. Norton antivirus and McAfee VirusScan are most probably two of the best known antivirus vendors around with some fairly good products but there are others out there that do the job just as well if not better. Purchasers of these products tend to look for different things in antivirus software so it usually boils down to taste at the end of the day.

At the moment Kaspersky have one of the best antivirus products on the market, solid, doesn't slow down your computer to much and is at a very reasonable price. Alot of people tend to settle for the antivirus software vendors products that come shipped with their computers, but we think people should always look around as they are more than likely to find something much better that suites their budget and they could find easier to use.

Antivirus or internet security suite?

Which should you choose? standalone antivirus software or a full blown internet security suite? If you already have a firewall installed, and use someone elses antispyware software then a standalone antivirus package should be OK. You may need to download a trial version from the site and try it out first to make sure you dont get any conflicts with the other software. If you do need a couple of products like antivirus and firewall, or antivirus and antispyware, we would recomment a full internet security suite so everything integrated without a problem. Remember that in most cases, FREE security software is just a cut down version with no support of a full product.
