With ADSL Broadband your home, or business phone line is split so that you can get broadband and at the same time you can make and recieve phone calls. This is really good if you, or your family use the phone a lot. Broadband means that you can use the phone, and the Internet at the same time.

When you’re logged on to the Internet, you’re always online, with virtually instant access to any information or service. No more annoying dial tones and waiting for it to connect, and no more getting cut off-line when you are doing something important.

High speed access, high speed downloads

You can stop sitting there for hours waiting for things to download - with downloads at up to 40 times the speed of a standard dial-up modem, surfing the net actually becomes fun, and you will find yourself making more use of the internet with a broadband connection.

You can do many things, from downloading music faster than you can play it. Discovering and downloading animations, graphics, video, movie, news and sports clips quickly and easily.

If you are going to be downloading any of the things above you should remember to check with your service provider if there is a cap on how much information you can download. This is usually called "Usage allowance" If the provider states "No limits" on this then you can "surf" until your hearts content.

Controllable costs, fixed monthly charges

Fixed monthly charges are usual so there is no extra to pay no matter how often you use it; your service provider may offer other options, including pay-as-you-go. If your provider only gives you say 1Gb (Gigabyte) of "Usage allowance" and you go over that limit in the month you could be charged for it.

You don’t need a second line to make and take phone calls as normal even when you are online.

Simple installation

Quick, easy and straightforward self-install connections come as standard so you don’t waste time hanging around waiting for an engineer’s visit. With most broadband setups you just need to insert the set-up disk and follow the instructions on screen. This will involve plugging in a "filter" then your modem and phone line, usually straight forward.

If you opt for a wireless broadband connection, or you are going to try and use a telephone "Extension" socket you could get a few problems. Also make sure that you have the right length cable for connection. Most broadband modems only come with a cable of about 2ft which isn't any good if your computer is on the other side of the room from your computer.
