  Symantec's - Norton Firewall for 2007

Symantec's Norton firewall is not available as a stand alone product anymore for the PC but it is still available as a stand alone product for your Mac. Norton firewall is now a part of their Internet security suites like Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security Suite.

We do have a niggle about the software products above and Norton class it as "ongoing protection". This is how they word it:

  • Includes automatic renewal which automatically charges the regular renewal subscription fee (plus applicable taxes) to the payment method on file prior to expiration – so you don’t have to worry about becoming unprotected.
  • You may cancel the automatic renewal feature of Norton Ongoing Protection at any time by following the instructions contained on the Symantec website and in your order confirmation email.

This means that they will take money out of your account automatically to carry on with the product. We think this is wrong mainly because they are automatically presuming that everyone is going to like their product. Many people change their security protection products depending on features, price and usability, Symantec should give you the choice and not automatically presume everyone wants automatic renewal.

Besides this the products are solid and very popular with a good pedigree.

Many people are still not checking to see if their antivirus software is up to date. Remember that in most cases antivirus software has a subscription service for 12 or 18 months, after that you have to renew the subscription or purchase a new antivirus package.
